DAVE SHUTEN’S “A SPARK OF COLOR” OPENS AT THE COREY HELFORD GALLERY

Congratulations to Dave Shuten on his new art exhibition, “A Spark of Color,” at the Corey Helford Gallery! The show is on view from 4/4/2026 to 5/9/2026. Owned by Jan Corey Helford and her husband, Bruce Helford, the gallery is one of the leading ones of New Contemporary art.

We had the honor of interviewing Dave for our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary. He’s the lead builder at Galpin Auto Sports and has restored many of legendary Ed Roth’s show cars. He’s also one of the stars of the Discovery Channel series, “Galpin Auto Sports.” He’s not only a respected builder but also a talented artist, combining his passions in this exhibit.

The opening reception on Saturday, 4/4/2026 was an incredible event attended by many devoted fans and passionate art lovers. Entering the immense exhibit space, visitors were greeted by giant sculptures of spark plugs, outlined in black and painted in bright neon colors. Mounted on the wall were profiles of more spark plugs. Under the exhibit signage were large reclining forms painted with a spark plug and other bold designs in the same color palette.

We love how Dave was able to turn a tiny unassuming spark plug into a huge colorful sculpture—transforming something mundane into fine art. Upon closer examination, the vibrant paint and its subtle gradations also reveal his master craftsmanship. His brilliant work ignites our imagination.

SENDING LOVE FROM NORTHEAST L.A. TO HAWAII

Hawaii is a very special place to us. We’re proud to say that many of our family, friends, and crew are from there. Last year, we screened our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary for MOONEYES Hawaii—one of the highlights of our journey in independently distributing our film. Our hearts go out to the people of Hawaii who are suffering from what “Time” magazine calls “the worst flooding to hit the state in over two decades.”

On Sunday, 3/29/2026, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., MOONEYES and “Craft of Speed” will be special guests along with NHK Broadcasting’s “Real Travel English” at Makina Drivers Club’s Sunday Service, a popular car show, at The Oinkster, a famous restaurant in Eagle Rock, California. We’ll have limited copies of our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book for sale. Makina Drivers Club will also be dropping a limited edition collaboration t-shirt with MOONEYES for the event.

A portion of the proceeds of the book and t-shirt will go toward Hawaii flood relief. The funds will be donated to the Lahui Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Ko’olauloa, Hawaii that “strives to become a dependable resource for underrepresented and underserved communities here in Hawai’i. Protection and preservation of culture, ‘aina and quality of life is our main focus.”

MOONEYES & “CRAFT OF SPEED” TO BE SPECIAL GUESTS AT MAKINA DRIVERS CLUB’S SUNDAY SERVICE AT THE OINKSTER

We’re excited to announce that MOONEYES and “Craft of Speed” will be special guests along with NHK Broadcasting’s “Real Travel English” at Makina Drivers Club’s Sunday Service at The Oinkster on Sunday, 3/29/2026, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. In a short time, Sunday Service has become a popular car show at the famous Eagle Rock restaurant, showcasing a wide range of vehicles.

Earlier, Makina Drivers Club had established a unique retail space out of a shipping container next to The Oinkster’s distinctive A-frame building. With its unpretentious industrial vibe and the restaurant’s gourmet take on American classics, they together have become a warm and inviting community hub for car enthusiasts.

In addition to Sunday Service, which is held on every last Sunday of the month, Makina Drivers Club also holds its Midweek Machines on Wednesdays, which is one of the few car shows in Los Angeles during the week. With an eclectic mix of cars and special menus, it’s the perfect break for foodie car people.

Headquartered in Santa Fe Springs, California and Yokoahama, Japan, MOONEYES will be coming out to North East Los Angeles, home of Makina Drivers Club and The Oinkster, where there’s a strong car community. MOONEYES will be bringing their iconic dragster to the event.

NHK, also known as Japan Broadcasting Company, is one of the leading broadcasters and the only public one in Japan. As a public broadcaster, they’re able to create unique and engaging programming, including “Real Travel English.”

Our friends at Teofilo Coffee Company will be providing the exceptional coffee service. They showcase unique speciality coffees of the Philippines with a powerful mission to give back to the country.

DOCUMENTING MURALIST DAMIN LUJAN

We love documenting the process of creating art. Recently, we had the opportunity to photograph artist/muralist Damin Lujan, also known as zaoone, painting a dynamic mural for the Anaheim Convention Center. We met him at MOONEYES events, most recently at their Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show.

Instead of a traditional projector to sketch his artwork on the site, he uses the latest technology—a VR headset that maps his artwork onto the wall. It was a surreal experience trying on the headset and seeing the concept artwork in place.

From there, Damin uses his preferred medium of spray paint. Growing up in Venice and Santa Monica, California, he’s influenced by graffiti, skateboarding, and the vibrant local scene. He also finds inspiration in mid-century and Japanese design.

Master photographer Elliott Erwitt famously said, “Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive.” While we shot both in color and black and white, we like how B&W interprets Damin’s otherwise colorful work. Bold graphic design. Fluid painting style. And powerful impact.

Thank you so much to Autumn Riggle and Bill Jagenow of Brothers Custom Automotive for sharing our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary trailer at the upcoming Detroit Autorama! As a special guest of Brothers Custom Automotive, Chico Kodama of MOONEYES will be attending the event, known as “America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show.” It will be wonderful to introduce the incredible story of MOONEYES to the Detroit automotive community.

We had the pleasure of meeting Autumn and Bill at the recent Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show. As huge MOONEYES fans, they try to attend the popular show every year, traveling all the way from Troy, Michigan, where their shop is based.

We were able to enjoy their company again at our screening at Analog&Grit in San Diego. As part of our cinema event, we celebrated the legendary Bean Bandits, who are based in San Diego. Bill is a member of the respected racing team so they came to support our event.

At our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary screening at Analog&Grit, we had the honor of celebrating the legendary Bean Bandits in their hometown of San Diego and exhibiting photographer Zap Teshima’s beautiful photographs of them. A Bean Bandit himself, Zap has been passionately documenting them for a long time. His intimate images reveal his close relationship with them and his deep love for car culture. CONGRATULATIONS TO SHIGE SUGANUMA, THE OWNER OF MOONEYES, ON BEING INDUCTED INTO THE GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW HALL OF FAME!

Recently, Shige Suganuma, the Owner of MOONEYES, was inducted into the Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) Hall of Fame. Chico Kodama, the President of MOONEYES USA, who was inducted in 2024, gave a moving introduction of his best friend and business partner. Shige then thanked everyone for this huge honor, including the GNRS, Chico and his wife Sandy, and all of his staff. Dean MOON, the Founder of MOON Equipment Company, was inducted back in 1962. Now, all of them share this prestigious award, connecting the past and the present.
