ANALOG&GRIT: A HUB FOR THE CAR COMMUNITY AND THE HOST OF “CRAFT OF SPEED”
The very first time we visited Analog&Grit, we were taken aback by its immense size—a cavernous warehouse. As a collector car storage club, it houses many coveted vehicles—vintage Porsches, BMWs, Mini Coopers, Datsuns, to name a few. It even has a Mercedes-Benz Unimog, which could survive an apocalypse. With its hip industrial vibe and passionate people, it’s no wonder that it’s become a hub for the car community.
We’re honored to be able to work with Analog&Grit in bringing our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary to San Diego and creating a memorable cinema event. We’ll be screening our film on a unique Urban Entertainment Vehicle (UEV) by Control Entertainment. We’re thrilled to celebrate two legendary racing teams and longtime friends, MOONEYES and the Bean Bandits, and display their renowned race cars.
We’re excited to showcase talented photographer Zap Teshima’s powerful photos of the Bean Bandits. Before the film, we’ll be in conversation with the Bean Bandits and respected builder Willie Masayoshi Dorsey. We’re also very moved by the generous support of Vintage Motor Union in organizing a “Honor the Past” Rally of vintage vehicles from Los Angeles to San Diego to attend the screening.
We met Analog&Grit through the thoughtful introduction of Ian & Cindy Delos Santos. Our cinema event wouldn’t be possible without all of these good friends and community partners coming together. Our deepest appreciation to them.

“CRAFT OF SPEED” TO SCREEN AT ANALOG&GRIT ON THE URBAN ENTERTAINMENT VEHICLE
We try to make each of our “Craft of Speed” cinema events unique and memorable. Our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary screening at Analog&Grit in San Diego on Sunday, 1/25/2026 will truly be special. Analog&Grit Collector Car Storage Club is a massive space in the heart of San Diego, which has become a popular car community hub.
Control Entertainment will be helping to turn it into a theater unlike any other with its Urban Entertainment Vehicle (UEV), a monster truck that has giant led screens attached to its sides. Think “Mad Max.”
This just sets the stage for two legendary racing teams and longtime friends—MOONEYES and the Bean Bandits—both whom recently celebrated their 75th anniversaries.
See the dynamic photography exhibit, “The Bean Bandits. Photographed by Zap Teshima.” Listen to a lively discussion with the Bean Bandits, respected builder Willie Masayoshi Dorsey, and filmmaker Ming Lai. And then watch a 2-hour feature documentary about MOONEYES.
Vintage Motor Union is even organizing a “Honor the Past” Rally of vintage vehicles from Los Angeles to San Diego to attend the screening. Thanks to all of our community partners, we’re deeply honored to share our film with the beautiful city of San Diego and celebrate an inspiring friendship.

ZAP TESHIMA’S PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE BEAN BANDITS TO BE DISPLAYED AT “CRAFT OF SPEED” MOONEYES DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AT ANALOG&GRIT
We first saw Zap Teshima at a MOONEYES Christmas Party at Irwindale Speedway many years ago. He was carrying a vintage Leica camera and and taking a break from shooting at the MOONEYES booth. We love Leica so we thought it was cool that he was using one. Later, we finally met him at another MOONEYES event and bonded through the love of photography.
Since then, we’ve become huge fans of his powerful photography—contrasty black-and-white images, using natural light with dynamic framing, of hot rod culture and beyond that feel intimate and authentic. They remind us of master photographer Robert Frank’s seminal book, “The Americans.”
In addition to legendary MOONEYES, a frequent subject is the equally renowned Bean Bandits, whom he documents with passion. At our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary screening at Analog&Grit in San Diego on Sunday, 1/25/2026, we’ll be digitally exhibiting some of his photographs of the Bean Bandits. We’re deeply honored to display Zap’s incredible work.

THE BEAN BANDITS TO DISPLAY RACE CARS AT ANALOG&GRIT’S SCREENING OF "CRAFT OF SPEED” MOONEYES DOCUMENTARY
We’re excited to announce that the legendary Bean Bandits will be a part of our “Craft of Speed” screening at Analog&Grit in San Diego on Sunday, 1/25/2026. Founded by esteemed builder/racer Joaquin Arnett in 1949 and based in Logan Heights, San Diego, they have won more than 300 races and set multiple land speed records. Both having long, rich, and shared histories, the Bean Bandits and MOONEYES are old friends.
According to “San Diego Drag Racing and the Bean Bandits,” “Arnett won the first National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Championship in 1953, was named to the International Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1992, and was awarded an NHRA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994.”
We love the diversity and inclusivity of this racing club. Daniel Strohl in “Joaquin Arnett/Bean Bandits” on hemmings.com writes, “Though several other stories of the name’s inspiration have been told, they all come back to the club’s reappropriation of an ethnic slur against Mexican-Americans, who made up most of the club’s membership. Of course, club members were always quick to point out their all-inclusive nature, incorporating blacks (notably Harold Miller), whites, Japanese, and even Lebanese members during the club’s existence.”
The Bean Bandits will be exhibiting three of their renowned race cars that showcase their past and recent history at Analog&Grit, including Joaquin Arnett’s flathead-powered dragster, their #200 flathead-powered modified roadster, and possibly Fabian Valdez’s nitro fuel roadster.
After the screening, we’ll be in conversation with the Bean Bandits and respected builder Willie Masayoshi Dorsey, who knew Arnett and restored MOONEYES machinist Fred Larsen’s land speed record-setting 1927 Ford Model T Roadster A115.
We’re deeply honored to be able to celebrate the famed Bean Bandits in their hometown.

JOIN VINTAGE MOTOR UNION'S “HONOR THE PAST” RALLY TO SAN DIEGO!
Savant Young and the Vintage Motor Union are organizing a “Honor the Past” Rally to San Diego to attend a special screening of our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary at Analog&Grit on Sunday, 1/25/2026.
The rally is open to all vintage cars and bikes. They will be rolling out on Sunday, 1/25/2026, 10:00 a.m. from their Vintage Motor Union headquarters in the Arts District, Los Angeles. Please DM and RSVP with @vintagejapanesemotorunion.
We met Savant through Nick Tolosa of Makina Drivers Club’s thoughtful introduction. We couldn’t help but love what he does for the community—celebrating diversity, uplifting others, and building community. He organized this rally on his own, and we were deeply moved by his kind gesture.
Thanks to the invitation of Oliver Wang and the Japanese American National Museum’s “Cruising J-Town: Behind the Wheel of the Nikkei Community” Exhibit, we had the honor of participating in the Nisei Week Grand Parade with Savant this past summer. These photos are of him meeting Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama of MOONEYES before the parade.
Thank you to Savant and the Vintage Motor Union and all the participants for cruising down to San Diego to join our special event. We’re very honored by your support.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: FIND YOUR PASSION.
When we met Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama of MOONEYES, we were deeply inspired to create a documentary about their incredible lives and legendary company. We’ve learned so much about life during the making of this film. In particular, they taught us about the importance of doing what you love. While it’s not easy, it’s profoundly fulfilling. We hope that our photos in the “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book like this one conveys that core idea and inspires you in your own pursuits. Check out our book at Kinokuniya at The Shops at Santa Anita or our next screening at Analog&Grit in San Diego on Sunday, 1/25/2026.
