JOIN VINTAGE MOTOR UNION'S “HONOR THE PAST” RALLY TO SAN DIEGO!

Savant Young and the Vintage Motor Union are organizing a “Honor the Past” Rally to San Diego to attend a special screening of our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary at Analog&Grit on Sunday, 1/25/2026.

The rally is open to all vintage cars and bikes. They will be rolling out on Sunday, 1/25/2026, 10:00 a.m. from their Vintage Motor Union headquarters in the Arts District, Los Angeles. Please DM and RSVP with @vintagejapanesemotorunion.

We met Savant through Nick Tolosa of Makina Drivers Club’s thoughtful introduction. We couldn’t help but love what he does for the community—celebrating diversity, uplifting others, and building community. He organized this rally on his own, and we were deeply moved by his kind gesture.

Thanks to the invitation of Oliver Wang and the Japanese American National Museum’s “Cruising J-Town: Behind the Wheel of the Nikkei Community” Exhibit, we had the honor of participating in the Nisei Week Grand Parade with Savant this past summer. These photos are of him meeting Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama of MOONEYES before the parade.

Thank you to Savant and the Vintage Motor Union and all the participants for cruising down to San Diego to join our special event. We’re very honored by your support.

WILLIE MASAYOSHI DORSEY IN CONVERSATION AT “CRAFT OF SPEED” SCREENING AT ANALOG&GRIT

We’re honored to be able to speak with Willie Masayoshi Dorsey, a respected builder and longtime friend of MOONEYES, at our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary screening at Analog&Grit on Sunday, 1/25/2026.

Willie befriended legendary MOONEYES machinist, builder, racer, and multiple land speed record holder Fred Larsen and restored his renowned 1927 Ford Model T Roadster A115, which set a land speed record every year from 1959 to 1964. The roadster is on display along with the celebrated MOONEYES Larsen & Cummins Streamliner at the NHRA Motorsports Museum.

Willie and Tim Cunha built the beautiful MOONEYES Special, owned by noted racer/car collector, Tom Malloy. In addition, Willie helped inspire Chico Kodama, the President of MOONEYES USA, to start land speed racing.

We’re thrilled to be in conversation with Willie. Join us for this exciting cinema event.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: FIND YOUR PASSION.

When we met Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama of MOONEYES, we were deeply inspired to create a documentary about their incredible lives and legendary company. We’ve learned so much about life during the making of this film. In particular, they taught us about the importance of doing what you love. While it’s not easy, it’s profoundly fulfilling. We hope that our photos in the “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book like this one conveys that core idea and inspires you in your own pursuits. Check out our book at Kinokuniya at The Shops at Santa Anita or our next screening at Analog&Grit in San Diego on Sunday, 1/25/2026.

DURING THE HOLIDAYS, CHERISH THE PAST.

This photo was taken at the dragstrip at the historic Irwindale Speedway, where the popular MOONEYES Christmas Party was held. This beloved venue no longer exists. Luckily, we were able to document Shige Suganuma, the Owner of MOONEYES, doing a test & tune of his MOONEYES Dragster there right before it closed. Our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book is filled with precious images like this one. Buy one at Kinokuniya at The Shops at Santa Anita or directly from our site. While supplies last.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM “CRAFT OF SPEED”!

This year has been an incredible year. We released our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Documentary and its companion “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book at the Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show, the largest gathering of MOONEYES fans in the world on the 75th anniversary of MOONEYES. And then, we continued the celebration at the MOONEYES Christmas Party, at its exciting new venue of Pomona Fairplex with record attendance. None of this would’ve been possible without Shige Suganuma, Chico Kodama, the entire MOONEYES Family, our crew, fiscal sponsor International Documentary Association, grantors California Humanities CA CARES Relief Grant and Doc Society, donors, supporters, community partners, friends, and family. Independent film is anything but independent. We’re dependent on the belief and generosity of others. Our deepest gratitude for your love and support. Wishing you a happy holiday season and bright new year! Enjoy a selection of photos from the MOONEYES Christmas Party.

THE “CRAFT OF SPEED” MOONEYES PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE AT KINOKUNIYA

We’re excited to announce that our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book is now available at Books Kinokuniya at The Shops at Santa Anita in Arcadia, California.

Living in Los Angeles close to Little Tokyo, one of our favorite things to do is to go to Kinokuniya. It’s a specialty bookstore, filled with highly curated books from Japan, Asia, and the U.S. The perfect day was lunch at Curry House (which is sadly gone), shopping at Kinokuniya, and snacks from Marukai (now Tokyo Central).

As filmmakers, we love looking through the film section as well as the art & design section. As concerned artists, we appreciate the history & culture section. And as pop culture lovers, we enjoy the extensive magazine section.

In fact, “Craft of Speed” was inspired by Magazine B, Lightning, Popeye, and other authoritative magazines/books (“mooks”) at Kinokuniya, which offer deep dives into visionary brands and well-designed products. Our project is similarly an extensive exploration into legendary MOONEYES.

While shopping online is convenient, there’s no better feeling than exploring a bookstore, discovering new books and authors, and experiencing a book in person. Check out our “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book firsthand. While supplies last.

THE GREATEST GIFT

“Craft of Speed” is an extensive multimedia project about MOONEYES, a historic American speed parts company that has grown into an enduring international brand. This project encompasses a feature documentary, videos, cinema events, a documentary photography series, and now a photography book.

The “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book documents the world of MOONEYES, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025, from the famous MOONEYES headquarters in Santa Fe Springs, California to Shige Suganuma, the Owner of MOONEYES, conducting a test & tune of his MOONEYES Dragster at the beloved Irwindale Dragstrip in Irwindale, California to Chico Kodama, the President of MOONEYES USA, building and racing his new rear engine modified roadster at the epic Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah.

The photography is by photographer/filmmaker, Ming Lai, who spent four years documenting MOONEYES. The graphic design is by design director/graphic designer, Sven Igawa, who’s created brand identities and advertising campaigns for many national and international brands, including Crank Brothers, HBO, Icon Aircraft, Mountain Hardwear, PlayStation, Quiksilver, VF Corp, and Western Digital. We’re independently publishing the “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book under our own imprint—Humanist Films X Igawa Design.

With 156 pages of timeless color and black-and-white photos, the “Craft of Speed” MOONEYES Photography Book is a luxurious slow read of the fast world of MOONEYES. The book is dedicated to MOONEYES fans, hot rodders, racers, car & motorcycle culture lovers, craftspeople, and this incredible international community.

We officially released the photography book and the "Craft of Speed" MOONEYES Documentary DVD at the Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show in Yokohama, Japan. We'll also have copies of the book and DVD at the MOONEYES Christmas Party on Saturday, 12/20/2025 at the Pomona Fairplex & In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.

We were deeply inspired by the epic story of MOONEYES. We hope you will be too.
